The start of a magical party begins with die cut lacy butterflies and softly glowing tea light lanterns. This butterfly lantern began with my Butterflies & Cross Box by Sizzix. It can create a sweet party favor box but when you add lacy, dimensional butterflies and the soft glow of a battery-powered tea light, it becomes a magical party lantern.
Start by placing the interchangeable butterfly insert into one side of the box die and run this through the Big Shot machine.
Remove the box die and place just the butterfly die on the blank panel. Rotate the die to add some variety to the second butterfly. Run this through your Big Shot machine again.
Repeat the steps above so you have all four sides.
Fold along all crease lines.
Die cut four butterfly bodies in a medium gray paper and adhere between the wings.
Cut four pieces of vellum to 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ and adhere inside of the box behind the butterflies. Do not place any adhesive to the back of the butterfly wings. Add adhesive to the side tabs and adhere the four sides together. Add adhesive to two opposite bottom panels and close the base.
Cut a piece of ribbon about 12″ long and tie a knot in the middle. Pull the loose ends through one of the small holes in the top tab starting from the inside of the tab.
Pull the ends through the next hole from the inside. Turn on the tea light and place inside the lantern before continuing with the remaining ribbon holes.
Continue until the ribbon is threaded through all of the holes. Tie a bow to close.
To create the loose butterflies, begin by using the butterfly insert die on a piece of colored card stock. This will create a piece with just the wing flaps.
Next, place the butterfly outline die onto this cut so that the wings line up with the die.
Run this through the Big Shot again to create a complete butterfly.
Adhere the butterfly onto 1″ craft clothes pins. Bend up the wings to add some dimension.
Attach the clothes pin butterflies to the lantern and dim the lights for a magical party.
Enjoy the glow from this beautiful Butterfly Box Tea Light.
