Dreamy Boho Wall Hanging
Update: I had submitted this project to Leisure Arts publishers back in 2019. They had accepted it for publication but then Covid 19 happened and I never heard anything more from them. Fast forward to 2025 and I was wondering if it had ever been published so I searched and found it. It was published in 2020 so I bought it through Amazon (Affiliate Link HERE). Makes me happy to see it in print.
With three simple knots, three skeins of yarn and some bits of left-over yarn, this cozy, creamy wall hanging is sure to impress.
TOOLS
- Pom-Pom Maker
- Darning Needle
MATERIALS
- Bulky yarn: we used 1 skein of Bernat Maker Big Yarn (MB) in Snow, 77 yards
- Medium weight yarn: we used 2 skeins of Bernat Beyond (BB) in Cream, 80 yards
- 12 inch Wooden Embroidery Hoop, single, inside hoop
Attaching the yarn to the hoop
- Cut the bulky yarn (Bernat Maker Big Yarn MB) into eight, 26 foot lengths. Fold in half and loosely wrap both ends using rubber bands to avoid dragging on the ground while working.
- Cut the medium weight yarn (Bernat Beyond Yarn BB) into eight, 28 foot lengths. Fold in half and loosely wrap both ends using rubber bands.
- ROW 1: Using the Lark’s Head knot, attach all of the yarn sections to the hoop in the following order: (Left to right): BB, BB,MB, BB, BB, MB, BB, MB, MB, MB, MB, MB, BB, MB, BB, BB

Beginning Tying Knots
ROW 2: Skip first the first 4 strands. Continue with a row of Square Knots. Skip the last 4 strands.

ROWS 3 THROUGH 5: Begin Alternating Square Knots

ROW 6: Begin Half Knot pattern with first four BB. Continue a column down with 20 Half Knots.
ROW 6 continued: Continue with alternating Square Knots leaving last four BB
ROW 6 continued: End row 6 by repeating a column of 20 Half Knots with last four BB.

ROW 7: Skipping the left Half Knot column, continue alternating Square Knot pattern. Skip the right Half Knot column
ROW 8: Skip the left Half Knot column and begin a new Half Knot column with second four strands. Continue with 14 Half Knots to create the column.
ROW 8: continued: Continue across with alternating Square Knots leaving last four free strands and the Half Knot column on the right
ROW 8 continued: Repeat a column of 14 Half Knots with the remaining free four strands on the right.
ROW 9: Skip the two Half Knot columns on the left and continue Alternating Square Knot pattern. Skip the two Half Knot columns on the right
ROW 10: Begin Half Knot column with first four free strands on the left. Continue with eight Half Knots to form a column.
ROW 10 continued: Skip the Half Knot columns and continue Alternating Square Knots leaving the last four free strands.
ROW 10 continued: Repeat a column of eight Half Knots to form a column on the right.
ROW 11: Tie two Alternating Square Knots with the first eight strands on the left and last eight strands on the right

ROW 12: Begin Half Knot columns. Tie 11 Half Knots for the thinner strands and 8 Half Knots for the thicker strands.
ROW 13: You should now have 8 columns of Half Knots. On the left side, tie a Square Knot connecting Columns 1 and 2. On the right side, tie a Square Knot connecting columns 7 and 8
ROW 14: Tie a Square Knot to finish off both sides
ROW 15: On the left side, tie a Square Knot connecting Columns 2 and 3. On the right side, tie a Square Knot connecting Columns 6 and 7
ROW 16: Tie an Alternating Square Knot connecting the remaining strands away from the center

ROW 17: Alternate Square Knots connecting columns 3 and 4, columns 4 and 5 and columns 5 and 6
ROW 18: Continue Alternating Square Knots for 4 knots across
ROW 19: End with one final Square Knot in the center
Trim fringe leaving about 17 inches angled along the bottom. Save yarn scraps for pom poms.

Making the tassels
- To make a set of two tassels: Cut a 30 inch length of the medium weight yarn. Cut two sets of six, 10 inch lengths of the medium weight yarn. Fold six of the short lengths in half and tie securely on the end of the 30 inch length. Repeat on the other end with the remaining six short lengths.
- Cut a 20 inch length of the medium weight yarn. Align one end to the bottom of the tassel fringe. Wrap tightly around the top part of the tassel. Use a darning needle to secure the remaining end back down behind the wrapped section and trim to match the tassel fringe.
- Make another set of two tassels following steps 1 and 2 above
- With one of the 30 inch lengths, fold and attach to the hoop on the left side using the Lark’s Head knot. Adjust lengths so the first tassel on the left hangs at 10 inches and the second tassel is at 12 inches.
- Repeat with the second length on the right side with the left tassel at 12 inches and far right tassel at 12 inches.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make another set of two more tassels. Cut a 23 inch length of the medium weight yarn. Cut two sets of six, 10 inch lengths of the medium weight yarn. Fold six of the short lengths in half and tie securely on the end of the 23 inch length. Repeat on the other end with the remaining six short lengths.
- Repeat step 2
- Attach one length to the far left of the hoop using the Lark’s Head Knot. Adjust the left length to 13 1/2 inches and the remaining length to 16 inches.
- Repeat with the second length on the far right side with the left tassel at 16 inches and the remaining tassel at 13 1/2 inches.

Making pom-poms
Use any remaining yarn and scraps of similar colored yarns to create various sizes of pom-poms. We made 3 large, 5 medium and 4 small pom-poms. Follow the instructions included with your pom-pom maker.
Attach the various colors and weights of pom-poms on the hoop above the macrame.

For a different look, try creating this wall hanging using a single weight of macrame cord for a more consistent finish. Adjust the number of Half Knots to make more consistent columns on either side.
