I have so much fun when given a craft challenge. A coworker asked if I could make a Christmas Cactus using something from my Succulent Serenity collection of dies and stamps. Well of course I took on the challenge with the result being a little different than what they expected of course.

Supplies used: Sizzix Succulent 2D & 3D dies, red and green cardstock, Die Pick {optional}, 1/4″ pom poms, gold thread, gold ink pen, 1″ circle punch, liquid adhesive and a Sizzix Sidekick {or BigShot} machine.

supplies

Start by die cutting four Saguaro cactus shapes from the green paper.

Lay them out, alternating the higher branch on either side.

layout

Fold each shape vertically.

spikes

Using a Die Pick, gently push the various spikes towards the inner folded side.

gluing

Apply liquid adhesive to the outer folded area of each piece and adhere. The branches should align. Do not apply adhesive to the spikes.

inking1

Apply the gold pen to the tips of each spike as an accent.

pompom2

Using gold thread, string the pom poms together leaving about 1/2 inch between each shape. You do not need to tie knots in the thread between each pom pom.

pompom3

Create a string of about 30 pom poms.

pot2a

Cut a piece of red cardstock about 2 inches high by 3 3/8″ wide. Punch two pieces of 1inch circle shapes in red. Fold down about 1/2 inch along the long edge to create the top edge of the flower pot. Apply some ink to define edges if desired. Gently curve the shape to help it form a tube. Adhere the short ends of the paper to create a tube. Adhere one of the circles to the bottom of the tube. Insert a bit of scrap paper inside the tube and adhere the second red circle about 1/2 inch inside the tube to support the bottom of the cactus.

Drape the pom poms around the branches of the cactus and enjoy. I’m getting into the holiday mood now!
