Welcome to the Designer Crafts Connection Blog Hop sponsored by Rinea Foil. The first time I worked with this amazing foil was for a previous sponsored blog hop found here. It is a great material to work with especially with Sizzix embossing folders. The craft foil was supplied by the sponsor but all comments are my own opinions.
For my current project, I wanted to create something that looked like glass enamel. I created several butterflies using the Sizzix Detailed Butterflies die by Tim Holtz. I wanted to try a different technique to create an embossed look without using an embossing folder. This technique will allow you to emboss with any Sizzix thin die that has pretty openings {holes in the die without blades} which works perfectly with the Rinea foil.
Supplies I used were the Sizzix Big Shot machine, Rinea Foil in silver, the Detailed Butterflies die, Sizzix Silicone pad {squishy pad} and Sizzix Impressions pad {hard black pad}.
To begin, I die cut the butterfly shape out of the silver Rinea foil using the Sizzix Detailed Butterflies die.
You can see that the die cut butterfly did not have a lot of detail when it was first cut. The die seen at the top of the photo above, has lots of detailed openings but they are not designed to cut. Using the special pads created the embossed details seen below.
To create the embossed effect, first die cut the butterfly. Without removing the shape from the die, replace the top cutting pad with the Silicone pad {squishy pad} and the Impressions pad {hard black pad} and run it through the Big Shot again. This will create the embossed details seen above. The Rinea foil works perfectly to hold the tiniest detail using this technique.
I die cut and embossed five butterflies to experiment with applying Ranger Alcohol Inks. I used Cranberry, Sunset Orange, Butterscotch, Purple Twilight, Wild Plum, Bottle, Lettuce, Stream and Eggplant.
To create the card, I used a floral paper design by Melissa Francis as the card base because it had such nice, muted colors to contrast with my vivid butterfly. I die cut a Mini Photo Frame from my Sizzix Photo Frame, Holiday Props die set and used foam dots to add dimension to the frame. I added a little button and string of “pearls” as a final embellishment before using more foam dots to adhere the butterfly to the front of the card.
