First I want to say that I had no idea what I was going to do with this product. Usually I can think of something and then it may or may not turn out how I envisioned the project. But this mold and casting idea had me scrambling for ideas. But since Halloween is just around the corner, I had some small plastic skulls sitting around so there was my inspiration.

There are two parts to this system. First there is the Mold Putty. Very simple instructions of blending two putties together and then molding it around something. I chose this small skull. I used a wet, mushy paper towel to fill the joints in the jaw so that the putty would not create an undercut.
I formed the putty around the front of the skull. There was a spot on the forehead that was a little thin and some area on the jaw that needed additional putty. The putty sets fairly quickly but I was still able to add more where it was needed.
Once the mold was hardened, I removed the skull. The details in the mold were really good.
I placed the mold in a paper tray that individual fruit comes packed in so that the mold and resin would stay level. Measuring and mixing the resin was a little stressful because of the exact measuring, the working time and trying to avoid bubbles but looking back, it really wasn’t that difficult.

The most amazing part was removing the hardened resin piece from the mold and seeing the results. Because it had a perfectly flat back, I taped it to my computer monitor and enjoyed the eerie lights through the clear skull.

I will probably cast another skull in the same mold because I bought some glow-in-the-dark fingernail polish to use on this project. I like this clear one so much but I could experiment on a second one.

I also want to try making a full 3D mold of something. I now have a lot of ideas on what I want to make. Even my son has requested me to make something with the mold and resin. Or I might just make a bunch of skulls and hide them around the neighborhood for kids to find on Halloween.
