Welcome to my first project during National Craft Month. I wanted to begin with a fun Easter project.
I love the technique of applying a pretty printed napkin on eggs but I couldn’t find anything that I wanted to use. So I decided to find a way to stamp and color my own design on an egg. I started with my Sizzix Sweet Baby Clear Stamps because I wanted to show the versatility of this set. I’ve used it as an embroidered design for my New Year’s announcement here and now as an Easter egg decoration.
I also love using thrifted and repurposed items in my projects so the paper mache eggs and Pyrex bowl were found at estate sales. The greenery inside the bowl is actually repurposed, unravelled yarn from a thrifted knitted sweater.
I started this project by painting the brown Paper Mache Egg with Acrylic Paint Titanium White
. While these were drying I used black, waterproof ink to stamp on a thin layer of a nice paper napkin. I then placed this on a paper towel {to avoid the markers bleeding through the napkin} and lightly colored the flowers using Copic Markers
.
After both the egg and napkin were dry I carefully cut out around the stamped image. To make it lay as smoothly as possible on the surface of the egg, I cut the green stem off on the top left and applied it separately in the next step.
I used a thin layer of Mod Podge on the egg and applied the bunny piece. Once that was flat, I added the green stem making sure to align the two stamped pieces where they were cut. I added another thin layer of Mod Podge on top and once it was dry, I added a bit of Copic aqua blue “sky” around the stamped image.
I have been looking for the perfect green knit sweater to use for the basket “grass” and finally found it at a thrift store in the form of a child’s chunky knit sweater. I cut off the ends to start to unravel the yarn. It makes a wonderful, unique basket filler.
There is so much more you can do with this stamp set since there are several individual bunnies in addition to the words and flowers.
Here is a page from my sketchbook that shows my first drawings of these little bunnies while I was designing the stamps.
Hope you have fun decorating your Easter eggs. If you enjoyed this project, please use the Follow button in the top right corner or subscribe via email.
