This year, Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day are very close together so I decided to create a project that can be used to celebrate either or both holiday. These easy Fabric Fortune Cookies can be made for a Valentine exchange among classmates or given as a token of endearment for a special Valentine.
Materials needed: medium-weight fusible batting, fabric {medium-weight works well}, soft thin wire, white ribbon (or bias tape) and flexible glue {I used Crafter’s Pick}.
To begin, I adhered the wrong side of the fabric to the fusible batting as directed on the batting. Next, I die cut the fabric into 4″ circles. I used a die but you can draw a circle using a cup as a guide and hand cut the fabric. The circle can be between 3 3/4″ to 4 1/2″ in diameter.
I cut the wire and white bias tape to about 3″ so that they were slightly shorter than the width of the circle. I placed the wire across the center of the circle and used flexible glue to adhere the ribbon on top of the wire. Set these aside to dry flat.
While this is drying you can print out fortunes to fill each cookie. Each fortune is about 3″ x 1/2″. I included the fortunes that I used below.
Folding the Cookies: Once the glue is dry, bend the circle so that the wire is loosely folded in half with the fabric towards the inside. Keeping the circle folded in half, gently fold up each side {sides without wires} so that the fabric is showing.
Adjust the soft sides so that they are full like a fortune cookie. You may need to gently push the sides out with your finger.
