This is the third handmade Ornament that I made for my sister. We base our ornament theme on the anniversary gift suggestion and this year it was Leather {traditional} or Crystal {modern}. We also added a twist this year because we both bought old player piano rolls while thrifting in Las Vegas so we agreed to include the piano roll paper to this year’s ornament.

Dream_Catcher_Ornament

I made a Dream Catcher ornament.

I began with a thrifted small wooden embroidery hoop. I used leather cording that is normally used in jewelry making as the web part of the dream catcher.

Web

I cut a piece of cording about five times longer than the distance around the hoop. I tied a loop in the cording which became the hanging loop and then tied the base of the loop to the hoop. Next I tied five Lark’s Head knots around the hoop ending with the last one in the same spot as the base of the loop. I kept the cording fairly tight between knots.

From the base of the starting point, I continued to loop it around the center between each Lark’s Head knot until I got to the center and tied it off.

Supplies

To create the feathers I glued strips of the music roll to both sides of a piece of Grunge Paper. Once it was dry, I die cut two feather shapes using the Sizzix Writing Desk die. I colored them using Distress Ink in Vintage Photo, Tea Dyed and Walnut stain. The music roll paper added the horizontal lines on the feathers.

Feathers

I wrapped natural twine around the ends of the feathers, strung some thrifted red beads and added a vintage chandelier crystal. Then I tied this to the bottom of the hoop to complete the ornament.

This will be our fourth year of exchanging handmade ornaments. The theme is Fruit/Flower {traditional} or Appliances {modern}. Check back again to see the ornament I made for my sister.
